Celebrating a decade in the fashion industry, Robert Wun has just presented its second couture show – Spring/Summer 2024 Couture Collection "For Love" – on the runways of Paris Couture Week.
In his Spring Summer 2024 Couture Collection, Robert Wun takes inspiration from his favorite horror films. With this collection, he delves into a realm where horror meets haute couture, by challenging the conventions of both genres. In the collection, it’s obvious that for Wun, these genres are not only participated in for fright, but also to become the portals of a deeper, more dramatic world. It also includes Robert Wun’s branded silhouettes in a more mature and confident way. In other words, it also reveals the brand's decade of design evolution.
In the first look of Robert Wun’s S/S 2024 collection, charcoal wool was carefully embroidered with crystal raindrops—a nod to the brand's sensitivity to detail and craftsmanship. It’s been seen with ease that Robert Wun’s creativity has peaked by the time when the collection’s headwear pieces—which included umbrellas and beaked helmets—took their place on the runway.
Wun's proficiency with textile manipulation was also in sight when the one-shoulder gown of rosy-beige silk and an electric blue creation with peplum ruffles—both showcasing his mastery of both drape and drama—hit the runway. A gown in ash-colored tulle, paired with a wide-brimmed felt hat invoked the imagery of engulfing flames, while giving a literal and figurative play on the themes of destruction and renewal.
The collection delved into darker, more self-examining zones, with face coverings that cast a stark, partially unwelcoming vibe. This vibe was significantly counterpoised by a bridal outfit, which was delicately adorned with crystals, skillfully simulating the look of fresh bloodstains. This pairing of the grotesque and the gorgeous was captured once again in a coat with jagged glass, a respectful nod to the iconic figure Trinity from "The Matrix." This piece symbolized the perilous sacrifices that have often been made ‘’For Love’’.
A personal tribute was woven into the fabric of the collection, where structured satin armor-like ensembles were inspired by the loss of the designer's grandmother. These pieces reverberated with personal loss, the emotional armor one may have to put on sometimes to traverse the tempests of sorrow.
The final scene was a theatrical tribute to the horror genre: a human-shaped appendage dramatically unfolding from the blood-red gown. This show-stopping piece featured a dramatic red bustier gown with a mannequin emerging from the back, symbolizing burdens and the unseen forces of the subconscious that one carries with them.
In essence, Robert Wun's Spring Summer 2024 Couture Collection was a celebration for the transformative power of fashion, which has also always been a great tool for storytelling and expressing emotions. It successfully connected both worlds of avant-garde fashion and cinematic horror, while leaving us both haunted and captivated for more!
